about

There are moments along this journey as a musician where you encounter people that will take you along a new path, influence your direction and enhance your musicality. For me, Paul Grabowsky has been one of those people. I feel like we hear music the same way; at times I feel like he knows the direction of my line before I know. One weekend before a festival performance with 'Lost & Found' (our baseless trio that performs free improvisations), Paul and I were warming up playing a standard. The two approached blurred and I realised the freedom that could still be achieved using standard song forms. I can't remember the tune we were playing at the time, but I do remember that when we finished the song we simultaneously stated that we should record a standards album. We decided to approach this session in an old fashion; minimal (if any) rehearsal and recording one or two takes, allowing for spontaneous creativity and true improvisation within the structure of the songs. So on a clear November day in Melbourne, 'On a Clear Day' was born. These are tunes that we love, that mean something to us, that have inspired us to create this type of music throughout our lives. WIth my long term friends and band members, Ben Vanderwal & Sam Anning joining us, this recorded music became joyful, inspiring, introspective and heartening. The music is a union of our foundations and our explorations. We hope you enjoy it.

The journey of every jazz musician begins with the exploration of standards. Usually songs written for musical theatre or films, they encapsulate the harmonic formulas which lie behind the improvisational innovations of every master from Louis Armstrong to John Coltrane. Their compact forms frame focussed emotional states, placing lyric and melody in the kind of dramatic balance inspiring for the creation of infinite variations. Jamie and I have played a considerable amount of free music, simply allowing the moment to suggest harmonies and in which rhythms erupt spontaneously. With this project, we have brought our personal approaches to line, harmony and rhythm to these standards, some very well-known and well-travelled, others perhaps less so. With Ben and Sam we felt able to allow the same spontaneity to inform these renditions, and I sense that the fun we had recording these performances is there to be heard and felt. This is our common ground.
